Imagine aliens landed in Tempe tomorrow- they'd notice Palm trees and street lights as staples in the valley- marking the horizon rising just above our line of sight. Sharing space above the sidewalks like tall stakes in the ground, now staking their claim as defining features in town. But just beyond the pavement and the places we've constructed, where the asphalt turns to dust and buildings back up into mountains, they'd notice the palm trees fade from sight as the land remembers time before new roommates put up lights.
